Having licked their wounds and gathered supplies, the party prepared for a return assault on the Foundry back in Tsar; previously, a small army of golems had stood steadfast against the adventurers–requiring a great deal of maneuvering and firepower to thin their ranks. Now, freshly rested and having made magical preparations to account for their continued opposition–the party once more penetrated into the second steppe of the temple-city of Tsar ready for a fight.
Soon enough, the group had such a fight on their hands: arriving via teleportation before the entrance of the Foundry, the party was surprised to discover that it had been walled off with heavily resilient dark steel. After pounding away at the barrier and slowly whittling such beneath martial assaults, Cassandra stepped forward with disintegration to clear a path–and much to the party’s surprise, new adversaries awaited within the main entrance of the Foundry, now with entrenched fortifications!
Battle was swiftly engaged, with magical bombardment loosed into the interior of the Foundry as Emma surged ahead through the breach; once inside, the barbarian discovered that several high-level robed magic users had joined the defense of the site–and more worryingly, a rhythmic gonging sound could be heard resonating through the facility. Outside, the party spied the immense super-cannon had changed positions since their last visit to the Foundry–now pointed in the direction of the Camp. With an apparent countdown to firing and much at stake, the party redoubled their efforts to enter.
One of the casters within seemed to possess a variety of gravity-affecting magics, reversing such to send Emma into the air before loosing crushing force over a wide area at the entrance–slowing and weakening the adventurers. As Emma began to cut through and dispel spells with a righteous fury and Meryk maneuvered to loose withering barrages of arrows, Brother Vang was assaulted by an automata demon, an abyssal foe of terrible grinding gears, blades and machinations; the demon plunged the cleric into its innards–but Vang was quick to excise himself to safety with his armor.
Inside, cannon golems resumed their prior cannonade against the adventurers entering the breach while Emma became engaged with a towering furnace golem alongside the entrance. Meryk’s arrows became thwarted partway through the entrance by walls of wind and so Cassandra bought the party time by plunging the entryway into darkness beneath a broad shroud of chilling energies. Outside, Anselme took to the form of a massive earth elemental once more–and fighting alongside Leone, the pair drove off the automata demon to secure Brother Vang’s safety.
Working with Emma, Meryk and the barbarian managed together to fell the furnace golem and make headway deeper into the Foundry. With Anselme and Leone rushing inside, Pandora utilized a scroll to raise a wall of force in front of the cannon golems to clear the way for the rest of the party. Emma reached the nearest of the robed figures, who promptly exited the battle with a word of recall–while the others withdrew quickly deeper into the foundry as the adventurers began to delve deeper.
Among their foes, the party spied a lich–whom loosed a sphere of disintegration which nearly eliminated Cassandra and Meryk; with a wail of the banshee for good measure, the lich also fell back deeper into the complex–but not before loosing a mithral golem to harry the party and delay their advance further. For a time the party struggled to beat back the mithral golem while Emma took to engaging the cannon golems above once the pair had broken through the wall of force; once both constructs were dispatched, the mithril golem turned to liquid metal and drained through the grates in the floor before it could be destroyed.
By now, the gong countdown was growing more frequent and the party hastened to delve deeper; the way forward was blocked by heavy doors once again, so Cassandra brought disintegrate to bear as before to clear a path. Clockwork spies were observed above watching the party, and thus were quickly dispatched; Emma took to the vangaurd, leading the party deeper down a long corridor into the Foundry’s inner sanctum–weathering magical traps sprung along the way.
Nearing the deepest chamber of the Foundry, the party ran into a sizable and fierce construct fashioned of weaponry–a dread blade tyrant, soon recognized–called Kah the Dark Captain by the foes earlier in the Foundry. Kah bore down against Emma, the pair exchanging vicious blows–while the tyrant staggered and flayed against the resilient barbarian’s defenses. From the rear, the party was flanked suddenly by the returned mithral golem–while from obscurity what the party presumed was the lich began to loose further magics upon them, stripping strength and other boons in the process.
Anselme and Meryk worked in tandem with Pandora to eliminate the mithral golem, while Emma and Cassandra focused on the dark captain; the wounds dealt by the blade tyrant refuted magical healing, much to Brother Vang’s chagrin–but retreat was not an option with the risk of the cannon firing upon the Camp. Pushed to the very brink and very nearly slain, Emma managed to fell the blade tyrant–disrupting the sinister creature into a formless heap of weaponry even as it loosed a disturbing taunt; it would seem Kah was not fully destroyed and could yet return again.
With the mithral golem eliminated and the dark captain put down for the time being, the lich seemed to have made himself scarce rather than engage the remainder of the party. Free from the more immediate threat of foes in their path, the party made their way into what appeared to be a control center for the super-weapon outside–and promptly sought a means to disable it. Wasting little time, Anselme spied what appeared to be some sort of geothermal coupling and disengaged it–inadvertently spraying the entirety of the party with superheated gas, much to the dismay of all assembled.
Nevertheless, the firing seemed to have been postponed as the gongs went silent at last; Pandora and the others began seeking to dismantle the controls, while the party also debated attempting to turn the weapon against other sites in Tsar. As Brother Vang and Meryk began to convene with Anselme on how the party’s wounds might be attended, the party’s reprieve would be briefer than they thought–for little did they know, another foe had set sights upon the Foundry as well, already preparing to take advantage of the window the adventurers had opened…
